CASP+ Definitions: Regions

In the context of cybersecurity, regions refer to geographic locations where cloud service providers have data centers that host their computing resources, data storage, and networking infrastructure. Cloud service providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) operate in multiple regions globally to provide customers with the ability to host their applications and data closer to their users, thereby reducing latency and improving performance.

Regions also play a critical role in disaster recovery and business continuity planning. Cloud customers can replicate their applications and data across multiple regions to ensure high availability and quick recovery in case of an outage in one region.

From a security perspective, regions are important because they impact data sovereignty and compliance with data protection regulations. Customers must carefully choose the regions in which they store their data to comply with data protection laws in the regions where their data subjects reside.
